Hi all

Is there an available rpi module that can make phone calls on the 4g network?

I've seen many that can use 4g internet but haven't found any that can send and recieve sms or phone calls?

Thanks!

https://www.waveshare.com/product/modul ... 4g-hat.htm claims telephone call support.

can be found on ebay https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from ... 4g&_sop=15 for around £90 - 110. The above link has them at around $70 (then customs import fees on top)

You do not gain anything from using 4G for voice or SMS - 2G is overkill

PiTalk is a 3G phone http://pitalk.co.uk that you can add your own programs into and the data rate is faster than some ADSL links in the local area

Thats a generalisation.

2G in a lot of countries has been decommissioned. A fact in Australia, and a lot of Asia.

For data, 4G with LTE has massive data capabilities. Depending on your carrier, 4G does offer advantages for SMS over 3G. Just check what your local carriers are providing, as you still have to use their SIM. NOt al lfeatures are supported by all carriers and plans.

With the push for 5G, a lot of 3G services will be replaced. 4G has at least a 10 year service window in most countries.

Unfortunately in the area I live, even 3G is not an option - I can get between one and two bars outside on one carrier only and that’s it.

None of the carriers have been interested in increasing coverage outside of the towns and two did not even respond to our MP when he raised it with them on our behalf. The local town got 4G about two years ago and that only covers the central area.
