Portable USB-Powered Monitors

Mon Nov 26, 2012 9:11 pm

I'm not too sure how many people are looking for a nice Portable Monitor but, I know I was and came across the:

AOC E1649FWU 16" USB-Powered Portable LED Monitor, and I know its a very nice one and currently for Cyber Monday it is only at the price of 100$ but, I was curious if anyone else has found luck in finding other Portable Monitors.

The AOC E1649FWU is still available at Amazon (US) for $99 and change. Will these USB powered monitors work OK with the Pi?

Depends what you mean by work okay...

If you mean display-wise, then I don't see why not - it is just another monitor. Get your composite or HDMI signal to it (converted to DVI or VGA if need be), and you're away laughing like a moa out of a mud pool.

Power-wise? Check the specs, how much current do they draw. From my few days of R-Pieing it, I can see the current available on the RPi USB ports is incredibly low (not 500mA+ that certified USB devices would expect), so I would assume something as power hungry as a high resolution large display would not successfully work unless powered externally (powered USB hub etc).

Dunno about the Moa. Maybe these had a different sense of humor. But it 'll definitely NOT work with a Pi, since there's no other video connection besides the USB. And USB is far too slow for moving graphics.

Even power considerations aside, this monitor will need special driver software.

Total n00b here!
Has anyone looked into the AOC e1649Fwu work with the Pi since? I realize it will probably need to be hooked up to a powered USB hub, but beyond that, can it work with the Pi?

I purchased the Pi to learn, so anything you have to point me in the right direction to finding it or creating it would be awesome! Thanks!

I can't offer much help, but I am able to get graphics to display on a mimo 720s usb only display/touchscreen, so the capability is there. If it's a displaylink capable monitor, you could try the drivers in the kernel I found here: http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewt ... 1&p=270950 as they worked for me, I just was never able to get the touchscreen working :(

Good luck!

This guy here seems to have found a software fix to make the AOC E1649FWU work, quite some time ago:

And now it's only $89 on Amazon.

i have seen this and it seems helpful if your fully understanding the methods and have all necessary tools to complete this.
i have a type B pi with 2 of these monitors, a drink DUB-H7 powered hub usb mouse/keyboard and wipi already setup. im trying to use raspbmc in my car with the main screen being the deck running off aux video/audio and also have 2 of these monitors running in the back seats, problem being is that with the new weezey you cant complete the kernel compile as suggested in that link. the first step of finding gcc-4.6 is where everything fails. i have done a little bit of research and found that it wont work because of all the updates since that was posted but thats where im stuck i dont know what to replace gcc-4.6 with in order to continue this process. any help would be fantastic.
oh also i have a mac and a pc neither have linux on them ... is this a problem?
