Running a forum on 3 B+?

Hello everyone,

I'm starting a project where I'm looking to run a forum on my 3 B+. At max, I foresee it having 200 active users. However I need some advice on this project before moving forward.

Firstly, what forum software do you recommend? I'm familiar with phpBB, as I used to create forums with it for fun constantly many years ago. I like it as it is a free software and will serve my needs. However, I'm open to recommendations.

Second, will the Pi be able to support the activity I believe I may receive? If not, I will build a cheap computer instead.

Third, should I install any specific security on my Pi? The forum may have potentially sensitive information, so is there any security one would recommend installing to keep the forum and the Pi itself secure?

There's nothing to stop you running phpBB3 on a RPi 3B+ it should be OK for your small workload.

200 active users? Per day?
Lets say those 200 users loads atleast (and im optimistic) 5 pages/day. That gives us around 1000 page loads/day.

Since all of your pages will be running off PHP, they'll get slow on high demand hours, since your Pi will be struggling with CPU usage.
Youll also need a good connection to handle all of those visits, and lets not forget youll need a pretty good firewall on your router to avoid getting rat or something. A good DDoS protection is not an option, especially for a social network...

Thats my pessimistic way of seeing things. Id recommend sharing hosting to avoid (most of) those problems.
