PS/2 on Raspbian?

Thu Oct 25, 2018 3:40 pm

I have an old PS/2 mouse & keyboard, and I'm planning to use them with my Pi. If I buy this adapter - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/USB-Male-to- ... 0924574780 - will my mouse & keyboard work on my Pi without me having to know lots of complicated driver things? Thanks! :-)

Very likely!

USB keyboards and mice are very cheap in case they don't work.
But my bet is they will work fine.

Those look like passive adapters rather than true PS/2 to USB interfaces to me so I would not expect them to work with a Pi.

You need something which more commonly looks like this -

Early in the life of USB keyboards were sold that were really capable operating with both USB and PS/2 interfaces, but came with an PS/2 connectors. If you wanted to use them as USB keyboard you needed a small adapter, containing nothing but wiring but which converted the PS/2 connector to USB.

That means that with such a simply adapter your "PS/2" device MUST also contain USB logic, or it simply won't work.

If you have an "active" adapter that contains the logic for an USB to PS/2 converter, then yes, you should be able to use it with a real PS/2 (only) keyboard.

These days read USB keyboards and mice are so cheap that almost nobody sells such adapters anymore.

How about one of these? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1-PC-black-U ... :rk:7:pf:0
I need an old keyboard & mouse because I'm making an 80's/90's-style Pi setup.

One thing to watch out for is that some of the adapters don't convey backslash or pipe key presses. That may depend on where the key is placed on the keyboard.

I'll keep that in mind.
