Full moon light ?

Fri Oct 19, 2018 5:49 am

I have an exoterra full moon light for my reptile terrarium.
I was wondering if it were possible

-control it from raspberry pi
-lower the brightness of the less currently in
-or to change to IR led for night viewing by webcam.

Thank you!

Given this comes up as mains controlled, I would not tough this with an insulated barge pole unless you know a lot about mains voltage circuits.

Even trying to dim it by covering it may not be a good idea if it gets hot - maybe a very very thin coat of paint on the outside may work but I doubt it.

As for the IR part - why not get the IR camera https://www.raspberrypi.org/products/pi-noir-camera-v2/ and use that?

It doesn’t get hot at all. They are just fairly dim leds.
I have the pi noir cam but it needs an IR light source.

I would add one of these to the Pi and skip altering the light https://uk.pi-supply.com/products/brigh ... spberry-pi

I would check with a vet or shop your tank occupants are not IR sensitive. Fish get spooked by flash guns and can die of fright!

It’s a Crested gecko.
I was hoping to not have to order more pieces online and more DIY option.
Thanks tho.

Andy, it's not mains really. One last the plug, it is 15V.

You can switch it on and off by cutting the cable and sticking a switch of some sort in there. Yo cannot connect that directly to the Pi.

Fenyx, if you measure the voltage of the circuit to the LEDs themselves, you will have more idea what you are dealing with.
You might be able to do something there.

To change to IR you'll need to buy IR LEDs. Up to you how you wire them up or stick holes in the casing etc.
If to replace the current white led (or blue) you'll need to know what voltages it currently works at.

A pi can control leds, you could rip the control board out of there, replace it with a Pi and Pi PSU, stick IR led in etc.
You will need to buy things though.
