So my idea for a project was spawned from this guy's product

and the fact that I refuse to pay $150-$200 for a ti-89 (the same price as a ti-nspire) when I can buy a nice touch screen tablet for less.
So...I remembered that there is an amazing program known as octave, runs right out of the box with pi and I wanted to build an open sourced calculator around the project.
These are my goals
- 1st and foremost... make it look as much like a calculator as possible, preferably not voyager sized
- 2nd...cost $100 or less
- 3rd...decent battery life
- 4th... able to do everything a ti-89 can
I'm looking into a touchscreen digitizer to use for a keypad so I can customize the buttons and their layout. I also found a usb driver board that should work with it.
I plan to try and power the pi with 8 NiMH AA batteries that spec in at 3000mA each
I made a parts list from ebay
total cost is about $75 without the pi. Before I order, I'm hoping to get some feedback, especially with powering both the screen and the pi, the screen itself, and the touch screen digitizer setup.
