Ws2812 LED pixels at 12v

Tue Nov 07, 2017 9:28 pm

I’ve done a load of projects using led strips with ws 2812 5V pixels and the raspberry pi neopixrl library as detailed in the fine tutorial by Adafruit

https://learn.adafruit.com/neopixels-on ... i?view=all

This used a level shifter to shift the pi 3.3v pwm signal up to 5V that the led strip is happy with. It also used a suitably high current 5V power supply for the leds

I’d like to use a 12v strip for another project for a variety of reasons and have found a suitable candidate on eBay

https://m.ebay.com/itm/WS2812B-WS2812-I ... 2871062060

I’ve got a suitable 12v power supply but am a bit lost on the signal line. Do I use the same as the 5V strip or should I shift up to 12v using another level shifter??

Also, is there an advantage if using a higher voltage signal line esp chalky as the strip I went to use is about 8m long?

I've used 12v and 5v WS2813 LED strips with the data line driven directly from the 3.3V GPIO. The data input is not directly related to the supply voltage.

I have the WS2811 set of lights @12v.
I see the arduino uno can operate them by connecting the the neg and sig to the strip (seperate +12 and minus power supply connected to strip with all grounds linked. but can't get a clear understanding of connecting the pi to the strip!
