Do you think it would be possible to make a dialler with a raspberry pi. Something like the Orchid dialler which is no longer made.

When I say dialler it automatically prefixes phone calls with an access code say 18185 during the day or a different code for mobiles that sort of thing. I suppose you'd need USB dialup modem or something similar.

Anyone have any thoughts on this ?

I good friend of mine made his fortune doing Modems and telephony equipment.
A few issues come to mind.
1) Hanging home built TelCo equipment gets the Real Phone company Pissy, really fast.
2) How many of today's kids have land lines vs cellphone accounts.
3) Phone Modems are a step back for data transfers.

If your looking for just a Call Dialer. Then go looking for a USB to RS-232 serial adapter, and a certified serial Modem for your local phone service. Your talking 12-15 year old tech. The hard part will be getting the control/command codes for the modem.

There are a lot of USB modems supported by Linux. The key will be to find ones supported by the standard kernel.org kernel rather than ones which come with binary (x86) drivers.

Using a USB modem for the phone system interface you could hook a keypad to the GPIO along with an LCD and/or a few LEDs and you'd have an infinitely flexible dialer.

And caller ID, and maybe an answer machine.

I would definitely be interested in connecting up a modem to pickup the caller ID.

Anyone made any progress with this, no point reinventing the wheel, I'd quite like them though.
