Since you only need 5 GB for your webserver, you could work like this:

An 8GB SD-card in the raspi, on which you load a headless Debian version with Apache. That should leave an adequate amount of room for web server files. If you do need more room, you can put your WDC Blue in an external USB enclosure, which has it's own PSU in the form of a power brick. That way, you only need:
Raspi
Raspi power
HD USB Enclosure
Ethernet cable
An enclosure for the Raspi is optional but can be made out of anything you have lying around...
(I would just stick the raspi to the side of the HD enclosure with double sided tape)

I think the case you bought is a bit OTT...

I like the case! And double sided tape on a Raspi! It deserves better!
The case is so my 2 cats are less likely to put hair on the PI ( grrr...)
The cable is so that I can move it to my computer room for modification.
Note. Can not run in computer room all the time, it is far too easy for someone to kill the power by accident. If it is directly beside the router, people will not turn it off for fear of stopping the internet from working.(cue sinister music)

Yeah, I'm actually going to design (and probably distribute) a case (or maybe multiple cases) in Autodesk Inventor, myself. But that would be for insulating and wall-mounting purposes only... I don't put the R-Pi on a holy stand

About that cable you're talking about: I presume it's the ethernet cable? I forgot to put that in the list of things you'll need...

the 100 mbps is not that much of a problem (you're limited by your ISP)... I think that, with enough users, the CPU, RAM and hard disk space would be shortcoming.

Nevertheless... I think it'd be a great idea to make a website devoted to the creation of R-pi accessories (be it expansion boards, cases, battery packs, etc, etc...). Now that I'm starting to think about it, I'd like to work on that too

Get the users first, then start worrying about load sharing. Apache will support it.

I will not be able to host 24/7. This was meant just for my personal use, so I may be able to keep up for a while, but the plan was to use a free dyndns account. I do not want to do anything big at this point, as I am not able to host for many people.If people depend on my site, I can not prevent it from collapsing due to a power cut. I would happily help, but I do not have the necesarry infastructure to host reliably. (grrr..)

I think the first thing to do is getting the website I know HTML and CSS, but more is needed to build a website which supports user accounts and a forum and the like. But of course it's pupil160's idea

Don't script then.
Use Wordpress.

You can host from Home. You just need to buy a site, say £6 a year with your identity hidden.
You then just link that site to your IP address.

Let us know how you get on. I think that many would be suprised that a 12 year old will launch a website, you could be one of the project's early success stories, before the PI is released as well!

I don't know at who of us the second paragraph of your message was directed, but Pupil160 can't provide uptime. If it was intended for me, my bandwidth at home is not big enough (512 kbps upload) to host a website for the public (I'm running a web server at home, for private use, mostly to manage my NAS).

Problem is, some of the ads are a bit unsutable for some users. Set up my own website, the ads were so unsutable, I could not display the site in class due to the ads.

2 things:


it appears that you need the 50m cable with connectors on - the link I posted was for bare cable (but there is another with connectors for about 50p more)
be aware that if you intend to host from home, whatever people download from your site will count in your allocated bandwidth... So if you're on a capped broadband package you might find costs start to add up
