Hi, some of you may be interested in our Kickstarter " VoxCube – 8x8x8 RGB LED Cube for the Raspberry Pi"

VoxCube has been specifically designed for the Raspberry Pi.
These cubes are also chainable.

Special attention has been made to make VoxCube compatible with the Raspberry Pi (Models, A+, B+, Pi2 & Zero). There are two ways of communicating between Raspberry Pi and VoxCube;
1. PWM using GPIO 18
2. Bitbanging, using all GPIO pins.

We prefer option two, as this gives the most reliable way to control more than one VoxCube from the Raspberry Pi. Each VoxCube has an ATmega1284p which used to convert the GPIO signals from the Raspberry Pi into a reliable signal used to control the LEDs on VoxCube.

I saw this Kickstarter and it looks amazing. At the moment it's hard to justify the price tag. Would you mind providing a price breakdown of the cube?

The price is high, this is due to the price of each LED. Also, as you are in Australia you would be seeing it in AUD, which also makes it higher. Where as I have based everything of USD as this is the price the components come in.

I would love to make it cheaper and it doesn't look like the Kickstarter will be a success at the current price :cry:

Here is a breakdown;

These are full colour LEDs or some special thing like that? I didn't look that carefully at the device but does it make sense to build it with, say, red LEDs? If people could buy just the kit and source their own diodes, that would really lower the cost. Maybe they could build it with cheaper ones and then later upgrade.

Could you make a Kit only reward that contains the PCB and other parts unassembled? It will not knock a lot off the price but it will help a little. And maybe a reward that only contains the PCB and the blueprints to make your own?

In any case, you've reminded me that you make a kick-ass screen that I will probably purchase in the near future.
