Why not combine gaming and education ?
What is needed is a game written in an interpreted language (or fast compiling), whith comments on every line of code and largers blocks of "tutorial comments".
You can play the game, then tweak it without any prior knowledge of that programming language and reading "boring tutorials" .
The kids then can tweak some variables and immediately see the result (nice, more "lives" !) , then improve the code and add their own . Of course, when hooked, the kids can dig into more advanced tutorials.
What PyGame would you recommend ?

Here is a link to a list of emulators for linux http://www.zophar.net/linux.html
Most of these only provide the source code for linux while others have complied versions, It would be nice if when the RPi comes out that someone gets as many of these working on it as they can.

Zophar"s Domain is a bit out of touch as emulators go. Everyone"s using FUSE for their Linux / Speccy jollies nowadays. And not to blow my own trumpet (OK – maybe a little – *PARP*) but there"s new software for these old platforms arriving all the time:

Re: Pi Games
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Elite considering the common 'hetitage'.
Re: Pi Games
They *have* mentioned Elite. Of course the easiest way to run it these days is inside an emulator, but I'm sure that a similarly themed game wouldn't be too difficult to write on this newer hardware.
On a different but related note, I've had a brief look at the FS2 Open source code. Some fairly heavy conversion from "old" GL to GLES2 is required to make it run well on the R-Pi, but I suspect that a lot of the work would benefit the main desktop version of the game as well. This fact might make it more palatable to the maintainers.

Re: Pi Games
And indeed, as it turns out, the FSO devs are already planning to convert the game to GL3 Core. This is a heck of a lot closer to OpenGL ES2 than what is currently there. So that's a project that might actually happen in a finite amount of time!

Interesting .. never knew this project actually.
Would this work on the RasPi ?

Re: Pi Games
What about standard Mame. That would be cool.. The link above for the xmame doesn't seem to be working I get a 404 not found error.

Re: Pi Games
Is there any way to put an old system like NES or Atari on an SD card and play old video games that way?
Re: Pi Games
I would love to see Visual Boy ported to the Raspberry Pi. Or other emulators for Sega or other arcade games would be so awesome.
Keen to play Sonic the Hedgehog or some Raiden 2.

Re: Pi Games
I've started a project to test and rate ALL of the Debian "Wheezy" games on the Raspberry Pi. So far, we've got a 50%-ish success rate. I suspect we can up that substantially in the near future with OpenGL drivers and such.
There are many, many hundreds of games including Doom and Quake all easily downloadable with apt-get. Here's the list (http://packages.debian.org/testing/games/) and here's the link for the testing project (http://www.pi-fun.com/index.php/project ... challenge/)
It's addictive though. I found myself stumbling across an ASCII juggling animation system the other day.. couldn't stop "playing" it.

Re: Pi Games
Regarding the Elite (or Frontier) question earlier, check out "Pioneer Space Sim". Not sure if the graphics (on low settings) will be too taxing for the RPi, but it's worth checking out, I don't think it has anything X86 specific so it should compile for ARM.

Re: Pi Games
The closest Linux Elite clone I've ever seen is Oolite - they've gone to a lot of trouble to get the look right. Don't think it works on the Pi yet, but would love to stand corrected.
Re: Pi Games
any way "command and conquer generals zero hour" might work on the pi? it takes about 128mb ram but runs in windows from a disc its from 2003 and is still one of my favorite games

Re: Pi Games
Why would it? It has no Linux version and isn't open source so no.sdd wrote:any way "command and conquer generals zero hour" might work on the pi? it takes about 128mb ram but runs in windows from a disc its from 2003 and is still one of my favorite games
Re: Pi Games
I'd love to see a Raspberry Pi version of Elite/Elite 2/FFE... hmmm, on seconds thoughts, no. That would be a counter-productive situation. If it ever happened I'd never use my Raspberry for anything else. lolSiriusHardware wrote:The closest Linux Elite clone I've ever seen is Oolite - they've gone to a lot of trouble to get the look right. But seriously, if I had 10 seconds to ask DJB any question it would be, "What about Elite on the Raspberry Pi? Come on, you know you wanna..."

Re: Pi Games
Is there any reason why Oolite shouldn't work on the pi? It's pretty lightweight, from what I remember.SiriusHardware wrote:The closest Linux Elite clone I've ever seen is Oolite - they've gone to a lot of trouble to get the look right. Re: Pi Games
I would guess the default linux version uses OPENGL, rather than OPENGL ES. I did try it on the Pi one time as it is actually in the repo - didn't run (blank screen).theoB610 wrote:Is there any reason why Oolite shouldn't work on the pi? Re: Pi Games
How tricky would it be to convert oolite across?
Re: Pi Games
I dont know, but have you tried ArcEM or another emulator to play Elite?theoB610 wrote:How tricky would it be to convert oolite across?
