Virtual Printer

Wed Jan 06, 2016 12:28 am

I work with a legacy server that sends LPR print jobs to a given IP address at scheduled times. It is headless and no user interaction is required. I'd like to replace the existing printer with a Rasberry Pi that emulates a printer. Instead of spitting out paper, it would save the print job as a timestamped PDF on a SAMBA file share. Do you know of an existing solution I can work with? I'm prepared to write the software if needed but it isn't ideal.

CUPS has a driver that will write a PDF from a virtual printer.

Has anybody had any success with this method? If so, could you post your steps? I am seeking to do something similar with saving PDFs from a printer.
Cheers
