If I need to, I'll do my own OS, and release it for others to use to "bolt-on" solutions. I've done it before, can do it again. It just eats up time, and slows down getting the important stuff out to the people that need it. The Kids and under-educated adults.

Just thought Linux would not be as bad as the MSWindows & Apple world on legal matters.
Wrong, just at the other end of the Bell-Curve, can't use anything for a commercial product.

I'll spend more time this week searching for a business model, else it is onward to doing a Fresh Clean Port of a RTOS for the R-Pi and low-cost educational & training applications.

And then define a New Type of License to add to the confusing mixture of what is out there.

I hope there will be a market to sell software on the Raspberry Pi. This will only happen if there is a large enough pool of Raspberry Pis in the wild. Being able to sell the software you wrote is a trampoline and a revelation for budding coders... who may then eventually set up a business in the UK, rather than emigrate to richer pastures abroad.

Ultimately it's up to the people who made the effort to create a piece of software, not up to bystanders, to decide whether they want to sell it, open source it, or discard it. You may encourage them to open source it but you may not forbid them from selling it.

@Bacan,

All *BSD licensed code should be useful as a basis, if you intend to develop a commercial product without having to release the source code. There are probably many other suitable licenses for that purpose, but those stand out for me.

If you don't mind releasing the source code due to going for the VAR angle, then a whole lot more licenses should be useful to you, including the various versions of the GPL.

And to me the 8051 stands out as the least pleasant CPU I never had the displeasure of not being unable to have to program. But hey, at least it is Turing complete.
