All *BSD licensed code should be useful as a basis, if you intend to develop a commercial product without having to release the source code. There are probably many other suitable licenses for that purpose, but those stand out for me.
If you don't mind releasing the source code due to going for the VAR angle, then a whole lot more licenses should be useful to you, including the various versions of the GPL.
And to me the 8051 stands out as the least pleasant CPU I never had the displeasure of not being unable to have to program. But hey, at least it is Turing complete.
