Has anyone successfully drilled holes in thier Pi?
And using an ATX PSU?
How hot do they get in enclosed spaces?
As i want to mount a couple in a 1u 19" rack, with some hard drives (SATA in USB enclosures) and power it by butchering the case's PSU , making essentially a cheap high-density NAS (im not bothered about speed)
Re: 19" rack?
I don't think there's room on the Pi to drill any holes. All the mounted boards I've seen have been mounted with brackets of some sort.
Re: 19" rack?
I'm putting a Pi into a PSU now, planning on using a bracket to hold it down, I'm not going to try drilling holes though the idea of holding the Pi down using the TP1 and TP2 holes did occur to me.

Re: 19" rack?
i'd say you can get enough power for the pi from the "standby +5v" rail of the psu (they usually support about 2 amps) so you only need to turn on the psu for the hdd's. but consider that they have a really small wattage, so atx psu's might not be efficient enough (i'd go for a lower wattage psu like sub-100 watts instead of a monstre 700 watts one)jdbennet wrote:Has anyone successfully drilled holes in thier Pi?

Re: 19" rack?
So you would need to use some non-conductive screws? And some standoffs so it didnt touch the case.SirLagz wrote:I'm putting a Pi into a PSU now, planning on using a bracket to hold it down, I'm not going to try drilling holes though the idea of holding the Pi down using the TP1 and TP2 holes did occur to me.

The PSU in the case is only like 250w anyway.fodi wrote: i'd say you can get enough power for the pi from the "standby +5v" rail of the psu (they usually support about 2 amps) so you only need to turn on the psu for the hdd's. but consider that they have a really small wattage, so atx psu's might not be efficient enough (i'd go for a lower wattage psu like sub-100 watts instead of a monstre 700 watts one)
I want to run 2 pi's and 2-4 disks in it.
Re: 19" rack?
Well I'd be screwing into a plastic backing that shouldnt touch any other metal, but yeah, something like that.jdbennet wrote:So you would need to use some non-conductive screws? Check out the PiSU for what I've done so far.
