Mini Laptop with Raspberry PI Model B

Wed Oct 07, 2015 4:54 pm

Hi man! i'm a new user of the Raspy and i want build a Minilaptop with the Raspberry PI Model B.
For the connection to internet i use the wifi pen that work great!

I have this problems:
1) i want use a battery of 960mAh from a Samsung gt-b3410, this battery have 3 "pin" (look the photo), can i use the adapter of the phone? Image

2) i want use the Samsung gt-b3410 keyboard, how i can do this? Image

Thanks a lot! ;)

Hi.

1. The 960 mAh 3.7V battery doesn't look powerful enough to run a Pi . If you want to use it anyway you will need a step-up converter (to give the Pi the 5V it needs, dropping that 960mAh rating to just 710mAh) and a charge controller (to recharge it with).
Adafruit have a range of 5V output / charge controllers.

2. You might be able to figure out the pinout of the flexible circuit boards (good luck with that) but if you value your time you might prefer to pick a different keyboard.

Thanks a lot for the reply.
What il in your opinion a good battery (cheapest if possible)?

I see that the xbox 360chatpad works fine, is good?

You are welcome.

There are trade-offs involved in your battery selection:
  • Price
    weight
    mAH rating (duration of use)
Generally as the mAH rating goes up so will the price and weight.

your charge controller also has options:
  • Price
    Output rating
able to operate load while charging?
Often you will find that the simplest solution is to get a USB Powerbank, these come with battery and charge controller built in (you will still need to decide if you want one that can charge while running).

I bought some cheap ones recently (~£5 for 5000mAH) which cannot charge while running but were ideal for my purpose. (actually they were a little large, but OK once I removed the plastic shell.

I don't have any experience of it, but it should be OK.

Ok man, i'm here.
I spend more time for the project and i have the follow upgrade:
- USB Powerbank 20.000 mAh
- Bluetooth Keyboard

Now, i have the last question.
I want remove the ethernet port (for a slim raspy), this can be a problem? And, can i replace the actual USB port "one above the other" with an usb port "one beside the other" to decrease the thickness?

Thanks a lot!

Removing the ethernet port won't cause any problems if you are careful with the desoldering. You won't have ethernet, obviously ;)
If you want to move the ethernet port to somewhere else, you can do with a short extension, but use the same socket as the one on the Pi isn't just a plain socket, it has some electronics inside (isolation transformers).

The USB socket is just a standard socket. You can replace the double socket with a single, and you could run wires from the second set of holes on the board to another USB socket.

My Pi Laptop plans are a little larger than yours and I'm hoping there will be sufficient space inside the old laptop I'm basing it on for the Pi, some extension cables, the video converter board, a hard disk and an amplifier to drive the laptop speakers. I probably won't have it running on batteries though. Not to start with, at least. The screen will take too much power.

Absolutely possible as rpdom says.
Another possible choice is to switch to the A+ (no ethernet, single USB) and add a USB Hub to increase the number of ports. This has the advantage that no modification is needed to the Pi board and the A+ has a much better power profile whilst being pretty cheap.
you can choose a low profile USB Hub that will add as many USB ports as you need.

Thanks a lot but the A+ is not powerful enough.

For the battery, what you think of this model? http://www.ebay.com/itm/20000mAh-UltraT ... 05jL3xxwOg

For the Keyboard: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mini-Portable-W ... Swj0NUeD7d

For the monitor: http://www.ebay.com/itm/5-inch-GPIO-Tou ... Sw9N1VxAbt

The specifications seem reasonable, testing will confirm if specs are actually backed by performance. price is on the low side which makes we wonder if it will perform as advertised but its worth trying out.
looks OK
I'd be cautious about buying a display without knowing how well it interact with the Pi, that display isn't massively cheaper than the official 7" display. I don't have any information regarding this particular display but be warned that the forums are littered with threads from people asking for help with their unknown display.

Thanks a lot! I've a 4'' display and work fine, but only with a particular rom of the display (raspbian based).
So, i wan't the 5'', but i'm not sure... the 7'' it's too big for my project, but thanks a lot, now i try :D
