I'm thinking about creating a small MPD server box that streams all my music from my NAS, using an mpd client app for iphone/android as a remote, and connect it to my stereo, or building something autonomous with a pair of decent PC speakers.

Basically I want 10-20 internet radio streams and a few 1000 mp3s at my fingertips at any time when I'm at home, with nice cover art on my phone.

doesn't that sound like a pretty straight forward project?

Airplay support would be nice too.

If I go for the pc speaker solution, can I somehow get MPD to power them on/off when music is playing? At 1W I don't mind it running 24/7, but a big brick PSU for the speakers will probably suck a bit more than that, and I'd love to power it off automatically. This is basically a home made version of Logitech's SqueezeBox Boom at 1/10 of the price.

I created something similar with asus wl500gp router. Bought broken without working wan port for 20€... OpenWRT is pretty powerful Linux OS it might be usable with R-pi as well...
But at end I pluged in usb sound card and now I only use it as internet radio player. One accessible button is used for shuffle to next internet radio station. No actual programming required only bash script.
