I was thinking!! 8O

I had a laptop and would not boot from the internal sata so ran ubuntu 11.04 off usb in that I ran xp

would this be possible with the rasberry pi!? Would require a low process hungary linux. So you had like 400mb for xp and 112mb for the linux

XP doesn't run on ARM. End of Story.
Plus, XP is now horribly unstable and support will end in 2014.
But, us folks are hoping the ARM version of the upcoming Windows 8 will run on it!
Also, to run Virtualbox, you need more than 112MB. My whole system (including the guest) slows down when running VB on a 2GB PC.

XP had that whole 256MB to itself though. If you are emulating it then you also need space in memory for the host operating system and the emulator as well as whatever you give to XP. Also note that emulation is the only way, you cant virtualise it as XP is written for x86 not ARM, and emulation incurs a big speed penalty. You can probably find an old computer on the street that will run XP software faster and easier than a Pi.

First, Windows 8 will *not* run on the pi, sorry folks ;) It's far too resource hungry and even if you did cram it on there and were willing to endure the crawl of the OS, you still wouldn't be able to get even basic video off of it (at least not until some one figures out how to tell windows to output basic video to the appropriate memory location in the GPU, and even that wouldn't provide for all the fun acceleration the GPU has to offer) :(

But running a windows distro off a linux *emulator* well that would work, but as it has been noted it would be painfully slow. Maybe if you found a very low powered virtual program, and then used something more like windows 98 :P
Dear forum: Play nice ;-)

Lol, don't be too offended. I looked into this quite a bit myself. I think maybe you could run WinCE, but who even cares? :D The difference in processors is what makes it impossible. The ARM cores take different instructions than the windows boxes with Pentiums. One instruction on an x86 would be like maybe three on an ARM(just for example). Only a few distros of Linux will run on an ARM at the moment. I'm sure the R-pi will change this tho.
A better question is why do you need windows? There's prolly a :Linux equivalent already. If you just want the look, I'm sure with some tweaking of the settings, it could look just like XP

The rest of the quote I agree 100% with.

Why would you want to run trash like CE in the Pi? It does nothing...

I just prefer xp over linux as I understand how the OS works. I also have a custom XP which is very minimal and runs on 100 mb of internet and takes up 1.4gb installed. I was just thinking that a small linux which could run just a emulater on its own and thats it would be capable of running XP maybe not lightning but that is not my aim I just would prefer the OS. Thanks
