Power a chassie fan

is there any way i can power a chassie fan from the raspberry pi

well, you can feed them from 5V (that is usb voltage), however they will not work at full speed (they need 12 volts)
you will need to re-solder the fan's wires to usb or gpio

You can buy 5v high speed fans there not all 12v

And you don't need to solder any thing

could any one make a tutorial on how to do this. I'am not good of trying things that i dont konw about and idont want to break my pi or get stungd of power

A LOT of pc fans are 5v or 12v. Depends on how they are wired. Molex connectors (the 4 pin you are familiar with) has a 5v/12v option.

If you are going to run a fan, I suggest sourcing a small chipset fan from a motherboard. Tiny, don't draw much juice, and effective.

sorry JMCFab i dont understand what your saying because english is not my mother language. so if you can re frase you. And no the fan i am going to use have a molex contetor and the small contector that i can plugin to motherbord

so you have a fan with a molex connector
- cut the cable before the molex connector (sou you have 4 wires coming off the fan)
- take one of the black cables and the red cable, insulate the other cables with duct tape
- get a usb cable and cut it somewhere
- get the red and the black wires and connect them with the same color molex wires, and insulate again the unused wires with duct tape
- then cover the connections with duct tape and now you can use your fan from an usb port of the pi

if you want to use the small connector, then you have to use the black as ground and the red for 5v again


or you can buy one usb fan (look for it on ebay you can find tons of them for a few bucks)

ive found that a Delta AFB0712HBB 70mm fan works well its a DC12V and 0.45A but moves a small amount of air via USB. I think its a sleeve bearing. others work as well its very much hit and miss from what i can see. Avoid fancy fans with lights
The above fan is actually the standard issue fan AMD ship with their retail CPU/heatsink bundles as well.

Rasberry pi doesn't need fan unless you put it somewhere with no airflow. Should be fine without

The Pi its self may not require a fan but if like me your running a hard drive then a fan is highly beneficial for shunting away the heat they produce

If you check the cases forum on the 2nd or third page there is a pi case with a fan. I powered it as mentioned above using the GPIO pins. Here is a map >>>>
