Full Contained Self Powered Pi

Wed Jul 11, 2012 5:40 pm

I recently got a Raspberry Pi from my work. After about a day of digging around in my scrap piles I came up with this little guy. A model B Pi that needs only to be plugged into a keyboard. It is self powered and has a bluetooth mouse and a fan cooling system running of the GPIO pins. There will be more to come and a video soon.

Self powered - do you mean self contained ?

I'm interested in the write-up if you do one - what screen is that using ?

Self contained power... I just meant it has a battery. The whole case was made out of trash parts. The battery is from an ARdrone.

I was hoping that screen was infact a solar panel. None the less a good little bit of kit youve made there

Solar power was an add-on that i intended on installing. However, the panels that I have will only power the Pi and fan not the screen.

That was my first thought as well.. ORAC was a masterpiece of forward thinking.

:D So how to make a Pi produce THAT Orac sound when booting up.

I know nothing - can this be done?
(Sorry - wrong thread to ask that!)

Still I LOVE TMFS's case.
And I can't believe it's made of scrap!
(Who has scrap like that?!)

What it really needs is the shutdown sound effect, and some kind of LED chaser ring installed!

Any possibility of a parts list and/or build plan - I REALLY need to build one of these.

I will post a parts list and attach the .ai file for the laser cut case. However, I would suggest that you don't use an ARdrone battery. They are expensive, unless you have a few laying around like I did.

I think his case looks better than the origiinal Orac

And it was bigger. ;)

So, I know some of you have been asking me for plans to build the TMFS case. Here is a list of materials, but keep in mind this case was made with stuff laying around my office.
1. You will need a 12 volt LCD screen that has a yellow RCA port.
2. You need a 12-14.5 volt battery (I used an AR Drone lithium polymer battery and put the charging unit inside the case too so I can plug it in to charge rather than taking the battery out to charge.)
3. You will need one of those car cigarette lighters with a usb port.
4. I know most of you dont have access to a laser cutter but you will need one for your acrylic casing.
5. A small low voltage laptop fan.
Take the 12volt car usb plug and take it appart, then wire it to you 12volt supply. Plug your Raspberry Pi into the usb. Wire the LCD directly to your 12volt supply. Plug the fan into the 5v and ground GPIO pins.
If you want buy a bluetooth mouse and keyboard to stay completely wireless.

Just tried to access that, and was informed that "The requested topic does not exist."

Something is obviously not quite right somewhere!

Yeah, they must have moved it. Thats why I posted it above. Sorry I don't have links to specific parts but my case was made from scrap stuff laying around.
