How to mine crypto on RPi 4?

Fri Mar 26, 2021 9:37 pm

I am well aware there is little profitability to this. I just want to do it for the fun of it and to get it working. Please do not reply with anything related to profitability, again I know that there is almost none.

I recently got into cryptocurrency and have been investing in XMR mostly. However, I have heard that it is possible to mine crypto on an RPi, and that Ethereum is the best to mine on it.

I have followed various tutorials, and they all seem to use cpuminer-multi which does not work for me, I just get a timeout error.

I saw this tutorial explaining how to mine ETH on a Ubuntu 19.10 build for Raspberry Pi (which I didn’t know existed): https://www.reddit.com/r/EtherMining/c ... erry_pi_4/

It doesn’t work for me, I get a compilation error.

So here is my question: Are there any alternatives to cpuminer-multi or how do fix the timeout error?

Thanks!

Toms hardware did an article recently https://www.tomshardware.com/how-to/min ... spberry-pi

Not sure if you will learn anything really as most of the work just automagically runs - it's not if you can track the process stage by stage. You let it run and see the result - a bit like paint drying TBH

Maybe https://cryptomininggame.com/ would be more fun?
Is a computer language with goto's totally Wirth-less?

I have a Raspberry Pi 4 8GB. I am trying to mine ethereum for the first time. I also have a powered USB hub along with 3 USB New PAC miners. What software can I use for this. I also want to keep it as simple as possible.

I recently began playing with Rpi4 mining as well, but my interest has been BTC. Here are my findings:

1. I was able to compile and run bitcoin-qt, which is the GUI for BTC.
2. I was able to download the entire Bitcoin blockchain; it is nearly 375 GB.
3. I was able to "solo mine" BTC at a very slow hash rate (therefore 0 BTC earned :)) using minerd, specifically pooler's cpuminer, but NOT using bfgminer or cgminer. The latter two cannot connect to bitcoin-qt no matter what I do.
4. I haven't tried pool mining with this setup yet but I figure bfgminer/cgminer are probably specialized for pool mining at this point and can't anything else.

If I leave the Rpi4 unattended, I get these BTC hash rates doing just CPU mining. These are for 64-bit Raspbian. I'll post the numbers for 32-bit later.

Code: Select all

Even though the CPU load is high around 4-5 the Rpi4 is still responsive and works fine.

Of course it would be much better to use an ASIC miner but those are in very short supply. For instance the NewPAC is completely gone from the market it seems.

Looking at the source code for that, I notice that the ARM assembly language file is empty.

32-bit Raspbian CPU mining results of Bitcoin is a bit faster than 64-bit:

Im at a similar stage in my "BTC Solo Mining" journey. I want to create my own mining tool as well. If you have any quick reference links that you've come across in your journey and wish to share I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance. If anyone else wishes to chime in on the subject that would be great.
