Use raspberry as pc audio DAC

Thu Jun 17, 2021 6:03 pm

I have a raspberry pi 3 for several years and would like to use it to do something useful. I saw that there are several DAC modules for raspberry and I was wondering if you could connect to the pc and use with high quality headphones just like a normal pc audio dac. Thanks in advance for the help

Almost certainly depends on the OS the PC is running.

You can't do it over USB as 1. the 3B cannot function as a USB device, and 2. AFAIK there is no USB sound card gadget module.

If the PC is running linux you might be able to do it with pulse audio. IIRC it supports having source and sink on different computers connected vai a network.

I've never done it so please don't as me for a guide.

if you're going to get a DAC for the RPi for the purpose you have in mind...
better just get a DAC for the pc instead, to remove complexity to the setup.

now if you really want to use the RPi3B with a DAC
just set it up as a streaming media player via Volumio.

once you've set that up, connect the PC to the RPi3B-DAC -Volumio setup via bluetooth.
then connect your "high end" headphones to the DAC....
"Don't come to me with 'issues' for I don't know how to deal with those
Come to me with 'problems' and I'll help you find solutions"

Some people be like:
"Help me! Am drowning! But dont you dare touch me nor come near me!"

Or over WiFi or ethernet.

Or use RPiOS with shairport-sync to make it an airplay receiver.

If you're expecting audiophile quality from a Pi DAC you may be disappointed. While better than the 3.5mm jack output many of the DACs available (especially the cheaper ones) won't be "high quality".
