Panel Mount Micro USB Extension?

Sat Jul 20, 2013 10:05 pm

Hi, I want to make a custom enclosure for my raspberry pi but I'm not looking to go the same route as most cases seem to do by trying to fit exactly around the pi and exposing the connectors as they are.

My case only needs to expose the power connector and the audio jack on one side and a 2x16 LCD + a pot hooked to GPIO on the other.

Routing cables for audio, LCD and GPIO is simple enough but I am wondering if anyone could point me to where I might be able to pick up a panel mount micro-usb female to micro-usb male connector extension cable?

I can't seem to find one anywhere...

Cheers,
Ulfur

Well, there's this:
http://comsmart.co.kr/goods_detail.php?goodsIdx=7185

It's not panel mount, and it's in Korea, but you could use hot glue, or make your own panel mount. I expect that if a Korean vendor has this, other vendors will sell it too.

Here's something similar from DealExtreme:

You could also try a mini-USB female to micro-USB male, and power the Pi with a mini-USB plug.

Thanks for your reply, there's plenty of "unmountable" extensions available but I was looking to avoid jury rigging it.
I could go with a mini or even a class B female but I really want to keep it a micro as that is the standard for mobile chargers these days and you'll find micro chargers just about anywhere. :)

I've used these for panel mount female USB, but it's only available in USB A: short-Screw-Lock-panel-mount-USB-2-0-A-male-female-extension-cable-25cm

I've searched ebay but I couldn't find any micro USB panel mount versions.

Ok, then how about one of these:
http://dx.com/p/usb-female-to-micro-usb ... ack-175368

It's a little bit chunkier, because it is moulded for the full-size USB A socket. You could perhaps drill two small holes in the face with the micro socket and screw it behind your panel. Then, inside, one of these:
http://dx.com/p/cy-u2-075-le-angle-usb- ... 0cm-222686

It connects from the USB A socket, which is now inside the box, to the Pi's power input socket.

If that's not acceptable, then how about this?
https://www.sparkfun.com/products/9614

You would need two small right-angle brackets to attach to the holes in the PCB, then attach the brackets behind the panel. Take a micro USB cable and cut off one end. Solder two wires (+5V and GND) to the PCB. Plug the free end into the Pi.

Cheers guys, as I said I'm really trying to avoid a jury rigged solution. It's strange that there should be no panel mount options available.

That said, it would seem the breakout board would be my best option. I can avoid puny soldering points, it supplies mounting holes and offers more of a professional feel than some form of drilled out, spliced together stock cable.

Hadn't thought of it before now, so thank! :D

It'd still be way easier to use a pre-fab cable with panels mounts so I'm still looking for that if anyone knows where to find them but in the mean time this is definitely the route I'll be taking :)

The nice thing about thinking outside the box is you aren't limited by the box.
I'd recommend a standard panel-mount USB connector, then just solder in a cable that has the micro-USB on teh Rapi end.

Something like this might work: http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Amp ... H1p2Csw%3d

Just thinking of options.
I'm only wearing black until they find something darker.

You can get micro USB extension cables on Ebay. Make sure it's short, as they probably use really small gauge wire so voltage drop may be a problem is it's over 6"~12".

And you can get micro USB female dock connectors on Ebay. They're not generic, they are sold as replacements for phones/tablets, so the mounting lugs will vary in their physical location. But since it's a do it yourself that wouldn't matter.

But finding a cable with a micro USB male on one end, and a dock/bulkhead/panel connector on the other end is going to be tough. You could use an extension cable, and rather than fit a bulkhead connector to the enclosure you could have a "tail" hanging out to plug power into.

Did you come up with anything for this? I'm looking for exactly the same thing now and can't find it anywhere. I need the micro-usb extender mount (like this http://www.datapro.net/images/1584_large.jpg) and a mount from the 4-pole 3.5mm jack (either to 4-pole 3.5mm or to yellow/red/white RCA). Please can anyone help?

sorry for necro posting

this was used with a banana pi because i needed the SATA.
personally i used a panel mount USB-B (printer) to USB micro-b cable to power my pi. because the full size USB-b connector is stronger than a micro connector.

i stuck it in a raid tower to convert it into a NAS. works well

you can buy all sorts of these on ebay and aliexpress.
and on ebay you could find them from a US seller who already imported them.

I was wondering if anyone had any luck finding these panel mount extensions with smaller length of cable?

Looking for micro USB plug at one end with micro USB socket (or USB 2.0 B-type socket) as panel mount on the other end, but with only 5-10cm of cable - everything seems to be 30cm+, but I'm putting it inside a fairly compact box so ideally wouldn't have lots and lots of spare cable!
