Case for ssd1306 0.96" OLED display

Tue May 22, 2018 2:14 pm

Does anyone have any pointers how to integrate an ssd1306 0.96" OLED display into a case?

I find it surprising that no-one sells a nice cheap bit of plastic with a hole just the size for these displays that I can glue onto my case or whatever. Ideally one with a nice piece of thin perspex on the front.

Here are a couple of case designs that might be a start point:

Regular Pi with 128x64 screen

Maybe because they're so easily undercut by 3D printing? Many options here: https://www.thingiverse.com/search/page:1?q=ssd1306

A nice case would cost many times that of the display, and most people buy these 'cos they are cheap.

I had a look, and it seems quite expensive to get someone to print this stuff for you. Any suggestions of well priced online printer?

It still seems like a gap in the market to me, good project boxes - every project ends up in a horrible maplin cube box with screws on the front...

Printing services are expensive because basic 3D printers are cheap. They have to keep viable by offering niche services that aren't easy to do at home. Have you checked your local library? Maybe a makerspace? I'd offer to print one for you, but transatlantic postage would be a lot.

Regarding enclosures, I guess I'm spoiled a bit: Hammond is a local company, and there are a couple of shops not too far away that sell overstock/surplus Hammond cases for cheap.

try 3d printing a case there are plenty of websites that do 3d print for little next to nothing and you can get free software to design
it

It seems to have always been that way. Even when we only had HD44780 text LCD displays, which were more standardised than the huge variety of displays we now have, it was rare to find bezels for them.

I imagine it's because commercial users won't use those bezels with their purpose designed cases and not enough hobbyists used them to convince anyone to make them.

Injection moulded bezels or enclosures should cost mere pennies but it's the tooling costs and minimum order quantities which push their price up. It's hard to recuperate one's investment unless selling a lot.

Most bezels or cases would only be designed for a particular display and sod's law will have it that everyone wants to use something else. All-in that makes it a risky venture to get into.

Currently it seems the best options are; to choose an LCD for which there is a case available, go down the 3D print it route, or stick with hacking enclosures. Results don't have to look horrible with screw heads exposed but it does take skill, time and effort to avoid that.

While I don't disagree about the free software (I use OpenSCAD), the “3d print for little next to nothing” bit gets a [citation needed]. The OP couldn't find any cheap places, but if you know of some, please share.
