I've managed to get wireless working on the board (with a zd1211 based adapter) with the new debian image and posted a little 'how-to' here.

Trying to get audio out from the stereo jack, I seem to have run into a problem with  the snd_bcm2835 kernel module.

Thinking out loud… Here'"s the log of my experiment:

Install alsa and mplayer

$ sudo apt-get install alsa mplayer

Looks like no sound device is detected, let"s locate one.

So it looks like snd_bcm2835 is broken.

It might be that I am blind, but I can"t seem to find any information regarding that particular module.

Omer, did you try modprobe? insmod won"t handle module dependencies.

I haven"t tried the precise image put up for download, but the following works for me:sudo modprobe snd-bcm2835

Sound should come out through either the 3.5mm jack or HDMI (it"s audo-detected, it will prefer HDMI I believe if your display claims support). If you need to adjust that, you can use amixer cset numid=3. This script throws up a dialog to change it:#!/bin/sh

Thanks for the heads up, Omer! Looks like my RTL8187-based 802.11g adapter should now work. Although, it doesn't seem to have r8712u which is what my 802.11n adapters use. Fedora did have that (but also freaked out with USB hub). Ah. You are absolutely right, should"ve used modprobe!

[Also: probably should have waited until I had some sleep before accusing the kernel module of being broken ]

Hi Drew,

Hope you are having more luck with the Wireless setup than me?

I have been following Omer's wifi 'How To' which is excellent, but I have a different adapter and I guess YMMV applies here.

I have been banging my head on a wall for the last four hours without any luck using the new debian image.

I have tried two different adapters, with different but both unsuccessful results.

The Edimax EW-7811Un which seems to use the rtl8192cu drivers that I loaded via the $ sudo apt-get install firmware-realtek command.

This is definitely further than I got with the previous debian image.

Despite this, I cannot seem to get a wlan0 interface when the adapter is plugged in.

I also seem to get a long timeout (about 3 minutes I guess) with this message:

cfg80211: calling crda to update world regulatory domain

Which seems to fail in the end.

For me, the first sign of a problem is when inserting the adapter after installing the realtek drivers.  When I try $ lsusb it just seems to hang.

When I try $ dmesg I get:

I have also tried a Zyxel NWD2105.

This uses use the rt2870 chipset

I installed the drivers with $ apt-get install firmware-ralink

it seems to use the rt2800 driver according to the lsmod.

With this, after a reboot, I can usually get a wlan0 interface but have issues with the wpa supplicant.

When the interface starts I get:

wpa_supplicant: /sbin/wpa_supplicant daemon failed to start
run-parts: /etc/network/if-pre-up.d/wpasupplicant exited with return code 1

This is usually followed by a kernel panic shortly afterwards.

I'm going to have a rest now, but hope you have more luck.

I notice the new Debian6-13-04-2012 is less than half the size of the previous release.  I can't believe the code has been made more compact so what have we lost?

Thanks for the new Debian image! The updated version, with driver modules, works a treat.

@Omer, thanks for the howto. Very useful. It was slightly different to get the WNA1100 dongle working. Here's what I did to get it going:

Unfortunately, the firmware required is in the squeeze-backports repo, so that needs to be added to the sources list. Edit the first two lines of /etc/apt/sources.list to read:

deb http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/ squeeze main non-freedeb http://backports.debian.org/debian-backports squeeze-backports main non-free
Then update apt and install the Atheros firmware from backports:
sudo aptitude updatesudo aptitude -t squeeze-backports install firmware-atheros

You can then follow the rest of the instructions from @Omer's howto about configuring the dongle. Alternatively, you could install and use wicd, which is probably more useful if you're moving the RPi from network to network.

One other thing I had to do with the Debian image was resize it for the 8Gb SD cards I'm using. These are the steps I went through.

I did this on Ubuntu, with the card as /dev/sdd.

Start with the SD card image written to the card, in a card reader, but with nothing mounted.


$ sudo parted /dev/sdd

(parted) unit chs

(parted) print


(this gave me:)

Model: Generic- SD/MMC (scsi)
Disk /dev/sdd: 121535,3,31
Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/512B
BIOS cylinder,head,sector geometry: 121536,4,32. Each cylinder is 65.5kB.
Partition Table: msdos

Number Start End Type File system Flags

(Then carry on...)

(allow it to add lost-and-found)


$ sudo resize2fs /dev/sdd2


Then put the card in the RPi and boot. You end up with a 7Gb partition...

I was looking at the size of the zip archive, not the size of the filesystem created.  This suggests that there was either less data to compress than in the earlier version or that compression ratio has miraculously improved.

I suppose that the obvious course of action would be to d/l the new image, mount it (the /dev/sda2 partition) on a Linux box and compare the size used to that of the size used in the old image.  Surely, someone could do that and report back...
And some folks need to stop being fanboys and see the forest behind the trees.

(One of the best lines I've seen on this board lately)

After releasing the last image a few posters commented that running "apt-get clean" would clear out the apt-get cache, which roughly halves the size of the compressed file. (Thanks for the suggestion!)

Maybe now free space for better image compression was zero filled?

dd if=/dev/zero of=/erase_me.txt bs=1M count=2048

rm erase_me.txt

And as seen on .bash_history, apt cache was cleaned(makes about 320MB free space)...

sudo apt-get clean

Oh, in case anyone's interested, there seems to be a bug in the Apache2 package installer that doesn't add the www-data group for the www-data (Apache) user. Fix it with


$ sudo groupadd www-data

$ sudo usermod -a -G www-data www-data


after installation, then restart Apache:


$ sudo service apache2 restart


I don't know if this is peculiar to RPi, or is an upstream bug.

same problem here with a Netgear N150 (RTL8188CUS chipset).. any ideas?

Was there a definite fix for the audio issue? I've done the apt-get install alsa-utils and the modprobe etc but it seems to cause my pi to crash when I try and play a file.

Just a quick note of thanks to everyone who are contributing to this thread. Thanks to all the great information in it, I had absolutely no problems loading up Debian on an 8GB SDHC card and running it on the Pi.

Don't have my PI yet but thought I would get ahead by preparing my SDHC card. I downloaded the latest Squeeze image and ran SHA1sum to check the download (on Windows XP) and got a checksum of f821205afdbd6136b0f2d32264b526b2cbddb5fc which is the same as is found in the SHA1 file which is downloaded with the image but different to the one on the downloads page which is 5e9b87ec7597f0ccae47c9cf153516fe803a4b3a.

Am I doing this wrong or understanding it wrongly??
