USB Webcam? (Command Line)

Tue May 29, 2012 11:02 pm

I'm quite an experienced linux user when it comes to using it as a web server, but need help with this.

(Debian)

I've seen a number of pages about using a webcam from the command line, in particular this page, but /dev/video0 doesn't exist.

Running usb-devices I get

Code: Select all

T: Bus=01 Lev=02 Prnt=02 Port=01 Cnt=02 Dev#= 5 Spd=480 MxCh= 0
D: Ver= 2.00 Cls=ef(misc ) Sub=02 Prot=01 MxPS=64 #Cfgs= 1
P: Vendor=045e ProdID=0770 Rev=00.26
S: Manufacturer=Microsoft
S: Product=Microsoft LifeCam-VX700 v2.0
C: #Ifs= 4 Cfg#= 1 Atr=80 MxPwr=168mA
I: If#= 0 Alt= 0 #EPs= 1 Cls=0e(video) Sub=01 Prot=00 Driver=(none)
I: If#= 1 Alt= 0 #EPs= 0 Cls=0e(video) Sub=02 Prot=00 Driver=(none)
I: If#= 2 Alt= 0 #EPs= 0 Cls=01(audio) Sub=01 Prot=00 Driver=snd-usb-audio
I: If#= 3 Alt= 0 #EPs= 0 Cls=01(audio) Sub=02 Prot=00 Driver=snd-usb-audio
So it has been detected, but I don't understand what step(s) there are in the middle.

Any help will be appreciated.

They added USB Webcam support on the Raspberry Pi yesterday according to their Github
https://github.com/raspberrypi/firmware ... c66b1a95f8

You can just download the new modules, or use the Raspberry-PI update tool by Hexxeh

Ooh, cool.
I'll try the rpi-update firmware updater by Hexxeh.
