Possible to stream from VLC to Pi ?

Tue Jun 25, 2013 9:07 am

Hi,

I have a Pi mainly running RaspMC atm. I was wondering, is there any way to get the Pi to somehow receive a stream of output from VLC (or other) from another PC and display it ?

(So somehow you would just select an option on the Pi and it would display whatever VLC is playing on the other machine) ? Hope that makes sense!

Thanks in advance.

You could use XBMC to do this. This is an OS you can put onto an SD card and it turns the Pi into a media player, it can browse the network to find a movie file on a Windows share and then stream the file over the network to play it on the screen.

There are various versions of it, Raspbmc and Open Elec are the most popular as far as I know.
Here is a video of it running on PC Linux, but it is the same as this on the Pi;

You may find that if you have a new TV the IR remote will also be able to control it, if not then you can also get an Android or iPhone app to use as a remote control.
