Using a DAC with coax input with a Pi

Wed May 22, 2013 12:57 pm

I have just bought a sweet 2496 (AK4396) CS8416 DAC to connect between my PC and amp.

I am already thinking about using a Pi as a dedicated hi end audio jukebox PC for playing flac and 24 96 files through the DAC and then amp but the DAC only has a coax input and the Pi lacks a coax output. Without researching too much, I think it is all doable using Linux with a small LCD monitor and all the music on an external USB drive but how the hell can I take advantage of the DAC's coax input with a Pi ? Any thoughts ? :?:

You'll need to add this card or something similar to it.

Its a DAC as well, but if you pull from the coax port then it's essentially just converting the USB signal into a PCM SP/DIF signal to pass through to your DAC which will do the analog to digital conversion.

Thanks for that my friend. It looks like a great option, just what I was looking for and I'm looking for a cheap cheap option. Since posting this earlier I found an old Acer Aspire 5520 laptop in my box of bits, works fine but no CD/DVD and the Ethernet port was blown by a lightening strike but the wi-fi works fine. Still, it has one magic thing that I did not expect in such an old laptop, a S/PDIF out port in 3.5 mm format. So now I have two options. Thanks again.
