hi OrchardAudio,

Does the PecanPi use the ApplePi overlay?

I haven't noticed a PecanPi overlay yet.

It will use the RPI-DAC overlay, which is essentially identical to the one that you mention. Both will work.

Code: Select all

dtoverlay=rpi-dac

Thanks Orchard Audio,

I added "Orchard Audio ApplePi DAC" and "Orchard Audio PecanPi DAC" to the piCorePlayer "Audio output device" dropdown list/configuration. It should be available in the next version of piCorePlayer. Obviously untested, but I can't see there is much of a chance of a problem occurring.

Having the full name of the DAC instead of some generic name reduces support issues.

I have had multiple questions regarding volume control on the unit.

The volume control can be either through the knob on the unit or through software when you control the device remotely.

The HW volume control on the unit (knob) will be better than to the SW one. Both will sound great.

First review / writeup on the PecanPi:
https://audiophilestyle.com/forums/topi ... rypi-dacs/

Some quotes from the writeup:
"I know very well how the SBT and AudioEngine 5+ powered speakers sound, but even as I was being somewhat distracted by enabling this new RPi endpoint in Roon, my focus was immediately drawn to the music when I started up Jean Michel Jarre’s latest “Equinoxe Infinity” (via Tidal). It’s a new reference recording, and I immediately noticed a significant sound quality improvement. Granted the SBT is probably a better streamer than DAC, but holy cow! The stereo imaging on Flying Totems (Movement 2) was outstanding, and the bass much, much tighter. Everything was just better."

"Thebass is huge and the imaging is precise. Way better than Ithought possible. I even forgot about wanting to add a subwoofer. My wife even commented on how great it sounded and wants me to now set up something at her office. What just happened?!?"

Hello, I am evaluating a FPGA reclocker + slave DAC configuration for my RaspPi. Does PecanPi make both RaspPi and PCM1794 slave to an external master clock ? Is this configuration comparable/superior to RaspPi Master + reclocker ? Does the RaspPi kernel injects some jitter by its own (independently from crystal precision) ?
Thank you

The re-clocking is performed by the SRC4193 chip which acts as a slave to the RaspberryPi, it also acts as a master to the DAC chips.

The jitter from the Raspberry Pi is completely eliminated. Here are two images with and with and out the re-clocking. Both are 256kpoint FFTs with 16 averages.

This image shows jitter:

This image show with Re-Clocking and jitter is completely eliminated:

The Raspberry pi itself has a very jittery I2S output, because it cannot integer divide its internal clock by 44.1k or by 48k.

I dont know what FPGA you are evaluating but with the PecanPi DAC no additional re-clocking is needed, it completely eliminates jitter from the Rpi.

Another great review:
https://theaudiophileman.com/pecanpi-da ... ard-audio/

"The PecanPi sits within an attractive price point and at that price it offers plenty: impressive sonic abilities being top of the list. Specifically, an attractive blend of dynamic force, rich imagery and layered detail. A bit of a bargain, then."

and

"I then played Looking for a Home, two guys and two guitars or, more accurately, Kevin Greeninger & Dayan Kai at 24bit/192kHz. The string manipulation from the guitars was impressive as was the silence sitting behind the pair: the contrast set up a soundstage heavy with emotion from this serious song. The sense of clarity was also excellent as the PecanPi took advantage of the superior sound source file while the imagery that set the singers and their instruments on the soundstage was excellent. Even the bass-infused foot stomps from the guys, keeping a beat, were easily heard here. The sense of tonal balance allowed me to increase the gain without having my ears bitten off."

and

"If anything, DSD output (despite the non-native processing) was the most impressive file output across the entire sound test as inherent noise was very low. Small and subtle details were able to flow easily from the rear of the mix and the 3D structure around the stereo image added layers and a busy, almost market square feel to the song which seemed packed with people and instruments. A party atmosphere, if you will. Harmonicas here, acoustic guitars there, an accordion, mandolin, 57 varieties of percussion but throughout the PecanPi allowed this detail to reach the ear unimpeded."
