I wish to have a wifi sensor based on esp8266 trigger prerecorded sound files on my rpi. Wondering the best approach. Thanks

imho search github for esp8266 firmware projects like tasmota which employ mqtt**, installing and hosting a mqtt broker like mosquitto on your pi will let you use a gui tool like nodered or just a basic script file to subscribe to the sensor topic and play your recording on que.

** while Tasmota was concieved to run on itead/sonoff esp8266/5 it loads successfully on wemosD1 and NodeMCU development boards.from experience..
