fruitbox MP3 jukebox

Wed Jul 19, 2017 6:23 pm

Hi,

Inspired by DWJukebox, I've developed some software to turn the Raspberry Pi into a retro MP3 Jukebox. It's completely skinnable using a simple text file. If you're interested, check out fruitbox at the HiFiBerry maker contest...

Thanks.

Hi,

I've uploaded a new video showing another fruitbox skin (based on DWJukebox's WallJuke skin)...

I'm trying to find the time to finish fruitbox off properly so I can release it soon.

Cheers.

I need to sort out a couple of bugs with it, but haven't been able to find the time to take a look at them. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks I'll sort them out and then it's good to go :)

Thanks for your interest...

Just refactoring some of the code at the moment; taking a little longer than I thought as life is getting in the way...but I hope to be able to release something in the next couple of weeks ;)

Cheers.

Thanks for update :) it looks amazing. I’m just a beginner and this was the whole reason I bought pi’s to start with. Been wanting to make a jukebox cabinet for a year now but seems like you are the only coder that shares a similar idea of how they want it to run. I had dwjukebox and loved it, would sit with photoshop and tinker on skins for hours. I always wanted a juke so at party’s people can’t switch songs while they are playing. I’d love to build this into an old stand up radio cabinet.

Hi,

fruitbox v1.0 is now released!

Installation is as follows:

1. It is recommended to start from a fresh OS install (Raspbian Stretch Lite 2017-09-07 release)
2. Increase GPU memory to (at least) 256 (sudo raspi-config -> Advanced Options -> Memory Split)
3. Install fruitbox dependencies and download fruitbox and the example skins...

Code: Select all

  sudo apt-get install libsm-dev libxcursor-dev libxi-dev libxinerama-dev libxrandr-dev
  wget https://codeload.github.com/chundermike/rpi-fruitbox/zip/master
  unzip master
  cd rpi-fruitbox-master
  chmod +x ./fruitbox
4. Copy your music MP3 files (either to the SD card or USB memory stick)
5. Point fruitbox to your MP3 files (edit fruitbox.cfg in the skin directory you are using and change the MusicPath parameter)
6. Run fruitbox...

Code: Select all

./fruitbox --cfg skins/WallJuke/fruitbox.cfg
For best results, run fruitbox directly from a command line boot, not from a command shell launched from the desktop.

For help, type

Code: Select all

./fruitbox --help
The user guide will give details on how to create your own skins, storing songs on USB memory sticks, and other helpful hints. You can generate the user-guide with the command

Code: Select all

./fruitbox --user-guide > user-guide.txt
I have tested it using a Raspberry Pi A+ with a HifiBerry Amp+, and also a Raspberry Pi zero, using the Raspbian Stretch Lite 2017-09-07 release.

Please feedback to me any bugs which need fixing, or any feature requests you would like to see in future releases.

If you design any skins and would like to share them, please let me know and I can include them in the fruitbox github
repository.

Let's Rock!

No problem. I will add that to the next release. I had already given some thought to that...you will be able to load/save playlist files from a new command line option.

This is Fantastic! i do have one request though. can you add more options for modifying the coverart.txt? so you can select whether you want to show the album cover art or the missing art or the Fruitbox logo for all songs, instead of just having it move down the list automatically with $NOW_PLAYING_ARTWORK if one doesn't exist. that way you can always use the fruitbox logo or the missing artwork if you want

Sure, can do. I will add another cfg parameter (CoverartMode say) which will allow you to manually select Embedded, Specified or Logo images (and also Auto and None). Hopefully this will meet your needs?

Hey,

Is there anyway this could work with a coin acceptor, and run a full mode actual jukebox recieving the coins? Would be interesting.

Hi

Fruitbox already has a coin mode; you can insert coins by pressing the INS key. You should be able to map this key to a GPIO pin and attach a coin mechanism to that I guess. I'm sure this has been done on home brew arcade cabinets...
