Rapsberry Pi as a sound level monitor

So we're working on this project. We want to record basic sound level information, aka how loud is it right now. A graph of the average sound level for the last day or so:


I've been using my RPi with a Zoom H2 recorder as a USB microphone for a couple days now and it's working to some extent. But now I want to put the microphone outside my window on a busy street in San Francisco. I don't want to put my H2 out there so I'm trying to find a better microphone/sound card.

Does anyone have any suggestions on relatively inexpensive (under $40) USB microphone and or soundcard + microphone combination that plays well with the Raspberry Pi? I want it to be inexpensive making this project easily reproducible by anyone and small enough that it doesn't add excessive bulk to the whole package. Would love to hear of other's experiences recording sound with the RPi
