Convert old radio to play Spotify/Apple Music

Thu Sep 15, 2016 1:32 pm

Hi,

I have a small collection of old radios dating from the 50's to the 70's - as it is, they just sit there collecting dust, occasionally one gets picked up, somebody says "wow that's a cool old thing" and puts it back - none of them get switched on ever.

What i'm thinking of doing is putting a Pi into one of the radios in order to play Apple Music and/or Spotify through it. I plan to use the original radio speaker and if possible, use the original on/off and volume controls to control the device.

I was just wondering what resources are available for this in terms of the software? ...controlling the media from an iPhone would be fine but ideally I need something that will play Apple Music rather than sending music to it via Airplay.

A great place to start would be with "Mopidy", a (MPD) service that can play music from Spotify, Google Music and local files.
The service has a pretty simple control interface and can be controlled from web-pages, other programs, scripts etc.

https://www.mopidy.com/
https://www.musicpd.org/

So your job would be to find out how to detect/read the buttons on the radio and create a program that will send commands to mopidy when you interact with them ( the buttons ).

Try out MusConv (musconv.com/) to convert your music and playlists into different music platforms. It's easy-to-use and I'd highly recommend it.
