Add USB power to speakers??

Wed Feb 17, 2016 1:50 pm

I am asking really silly questions, I know but I am new to the raspberry pi and using it. My question is would I be able to somehow add usb power to some speakers that have a 3.5mm jack so that I am able to power them. I know that the actual plug isn't able to power much as it has an extremely small amount of current that can be supplied to it so I was wondering if you were able to add more current from the plug to be able to use the speaker probably. They are literally a couple of speakers connected together so they are able to be used as I had to take out the amp board so they would work. (I bought them second hand.)

The easiest solution I can think of is to use a USB Sound Card Adapter like this one.

You could chop up a USB lead to supply power to one of these at the speaker end...

Pi2B Mini-PC/Media Centre: ARM=1GHz (+3), Core=500MHz, v3d=500MHz, h264=333MHz, RAM=DDR2-1200 (+6/+4/+4+schmoo). Sandisk Ultra HC-I 32GB microSD card on '50=100' OCed slot (42MB/s read) running Raspbian/KODI16, Seagate 3.5" 1.5TB HDD mass storage.

You need to power up your speaker i.e. audio amplifier with USB power i.e. 5VDC. There is only one limitations i.e. USB powered devices have very less current sourcing capabilities. If you are trying to power you amplifier module with USB power then you will only get few Watts of amplification i.e. the loudness of the sound will be small.

The following link will help you to do so.

But the OPAMP used in the tutorial for amplification is not quite stable and will even induce noise on high pitch. But the tutorial will give you some idea of your idea implementations. For better implementations go for 5VDC audio Amps of 3Watts max. these are readily available with manufacturers like Philips etc.
