voice speaking through audio jack

Wed Jul 28, 2021 11:13 pm

Today I started using a Raspberry Pi 1 B.

You might say I should invest in a 3 or 4 and I can't disagree with you, but I am where I am.

Tonight I installed Raspberry Pi OS onto an SD card and set it up to run headless by placing an empty file in the root directory named "ssh"

The Pi boots OK and I can access via SSH from my laptop.

One of the things I want to do is play sound files on the Pi and so I plugged a small stereo speaker into the audio jack.

Before I could do anything else a voice sound file started playing through the speaker.

The voice is very indistinct, but it says something like:

"To install net_free_breezer press and hold ALT K"

This is repeated continuously about every five seconds.

Does anyone know what this means?

I tried running the command:

"speaker-test"

which plays white or pink noise until Ctrl-C is pressed

That worked OK, but the voice keeps speaking in the background.

I was also able to play .WAV files which I found in the /usr/share/sounds/alsa folder by using

"aplay filename.wav"

Again the voice continue in the background.

This probably an old well documented feature, but I can't find any reference.

thats the setup wizard that always runs on first bootup, its offering to install a screen reader for blind users

i think its called piwiz, if you search the forum with those keywords you should find answers on how to stop it

What cleverca22 said. The first setup wizard is repeatedly saying "To install the screen reader press control alt space". Delete /etc/xdg/autostart/piwiz.desktop to stop it from running.

Thanks to all for the quick and helpful replies. It makes perfect sense that Raspberry Pi foundation would provide such an option. I just could not find anything online or in the forums about the voice. I suspect I was using the wrong search terms.
