rotate + resize the display zone ?

Fri Oct 12, 2018 8:18 am

totally new to linux and raspberry, maybe someone here could help :

i don't know if this is possible to force it that way but if it is, it could help a lot : big size 4/3 ou 5/4 screens dont exist.
and new wide screens always have useless big black borders on old games.

the goal would be to use a big flat tv, rotate it 90, partly hidden in an arcade upright cabinet to use only a portion of it to display recalbox or any software distribution a zone in an oldschool 4/3 ou 5/4 ratio better for display the old arcade games and as big as possible without black borders.

it would look kinda like this : Image

thank you,

How big is big?
You can have 23in with 1920x1200pixel resolution, or if you're lucky you can even find a 27in of silimiar resolution.

19in with 1280x1024pixels might be the cheapest screen in 4:3 aspect ratio.

the1920*1200 display you are talking about are wide 16/9 ou 16/10 displays, not the usual 4/3 ou 5/4 type that was in arcade cabinets.
yes the max 4/3 ou 5/4 lcd availables are 19" but i want bigger.

currently my arcade cabinet hosts a 55cm (+/- 22") diagonal crt tv (the original arcade monitor was very similar in size but died)
i'm looking for a solution that would give me the same display size with minimumblack borders .
Here, one important parameter is the internal width available in the arcade cabinet. the height on the contrary is not limited .
any modern wide lcd in landscape mode when installed in the cabinet would result in smaler display + black borders.

that is why what i asked = largest tv that could (once rotated in portait mode) fit my cabinet seemed to be the best solution i could think of,
but only if it can be done. :?:
