Maybe, it depends what voltage/current level you're running in that part of your circuit. It's a little unorthodox but it is a diode.

It is 5v, because im using a 555 timer

Should be OK. I was winking LEDs with 555s thirty-five years ago.

Can you show or give a link to the circuit you are building and say where you are thinking about putting the LED?

It isn't a zener diode. They've used the wrong symbol on the schematic (I've seen this done other places too. Not good!).

The diode used in the example is a IN4007, but pretty much any general purpose diode will do. The LED may work - I'm not sure if the voltage drop across it will be too high. I was worried that as a 1N4007 was mentioned it might have needed to take more current than an LED can handle, but that's not the case.
