Home Automation with Raspberry

Thu Dec 26, 2013 10:04 pm

Hey guys,
I'm new to the raspberry community and it would be kind if you could give me some information on a project I'm planning to do.

I would like to use a raspberry as the controller for a z-wave network and maybe if possible for my sonos system. Additionally i would like to wake up my NAS (with WoL) and be able to controll everything via wifi or through the internet from all over the world with my laptop/iphone/android tablet.

So here are my questions:
Would you recommend using a z-wave stick like the one of aeon labs or should i use the razberry modul? What are the advantages?
Which OS is the best suited for this purpose? Which are well suited programms i need? Is it even possible to controll everything from different devices like apple/android/windows? I would like a programm with whom i can create my own interfaces for the devices.

It would be nice if you could give me some advice :) . I know a bit c++ and am willing if neccessary to learn another programming language.

Thank you in advance :D

I would suggest that you look at the OpenRemote project. It will require you to learn a Java-type language and the documentation is lacking, but they seem to have various degrees of support for the RPi, Sonos, NAS devices, Z-Wave, Windows, iOS, and Android. If you're willing to do an archaeological dig for documentation and examples, it might be a solution. I have chosen to write my own software for the RPi that supports Z-Wave devices in C++ using the OpenZWave library, but that isn't a casual exercise either.
