Remember that magazine where you built a robot called Cybot, or Cybor as it was called in Spain.

Well I still have a partly built one. a house move and the birth of our daughter at the time meant I didn't have time to finish it. I have all the magazines and bits. So I was wondering when I get my PI should I rebuild it using this.

For those that don't know it looks like this

A link to info on the little chap.

Been looking a bit more into the possibility of this, and it looks feasible. a few people have done it with Arduinos.

Just need to find the best way to interface everything.

Happy days - My first ever PICAXE project was a DIY Cybot controller. They Cybot was real value for money if you just got the chassis and the motor control board. That's a simple dual H-Bridge which can be controlled by just four digital signals so should be easy enough to get working with an R-P via GPIO.

The only thing to watch for is not turning both forward and reverse drive on at the same time as that enables both sides of the H-Bridge and shorts the motor supply !

The Cybot was a 5V system so take care with what you connect to where, but I think you should be okay with 3.3V signals into the motor drive board.

It's also not a very good driver so could be replaced with an L293D or similar. The real downside of Cybot is it's motors are pretty noisy but it's a good platform to get started with. I still find them cheap at car boot sales and a charity shops.

Nothing yet. Still mucking about with Debian Squeeze and Raspbmc at the moment. Plus work commitments are getting in the way :( .

I've got a Cybot sitting around, so this seems like a fun use for it as well.

Just unsure how to go about it. Would I need to protect the GPIO from the Motor Board in anyway?

At last - this could be a use for my Pi, as otherwise I cannot find a use for it.

I have 2 cybots, one I collected everything for but the jockey wheel broke and another I got that has a good jockey wheel on.

But ISTR that it had an onboard computer already, so what else do you think you would be able to do with it by using a pi?

I've got my Cybot running around controlled via PHP, with an LCD screen hanging off the back displaying current CPU temp and clock (No pic yet).
I plan to add the line follower, distance sensors and impliment an awareness of it's surroundings so it can be told where to go, for instance a charging dock (automatically when batteries start running down).

But using PHP it has been controlled by friends with port forwarding on the router, just needs a webcam on it and anyone can have a go

This is a big wish but it would be amazing if, for a limited time only, you allowed people from the community to have a go too via PHP/web. And shot some videos for posterity. It would be a first here for that kind of thing. A sort of virtual raspberry pi jam ..

Yes, it would encourage others to do similar projects.

I've had some success connecting a Pi to a Cybot - results can be seen here - http://pi.nhsa.co.uk/index.php?page=projects-pibot
