Razberry or USB Z-Wave stick?

Fri Sep 06, 2013 8:43 pm

Hi!

I am new to the entire Raspberrry scene but thought I should try to replace my Vera Lite with a Raspberry running Domoticz.

I have ordered a Raspberry but I will need to add Z-Wave support (I already have a RTXtrx). Is it possible to use a USB Z-Wave dongle (i.e. http://www.tricklestar.com/intl/product ... stick.html) instead of using the more expensive add-on chip Razberry (http://razberry.z-wave.me/)?

A USB dongle should be more useful for other projects and cost ~25% of the Razberry on Ebay, but I really do not want to buy both in the end.

Anyone know?

Hi,

Looking at the drivers page for the product you are looking at, it looks like it uses a USB to serial chip (PL-2303) that is supported by Linux kernel and works well with Pi. I use the usb to TTl dongles base don this chip to connect to Pi's serial port and just tried conencting one to the Pi's USB itself and get a serial device /dev/ttyUSB0 created.
So, I would think that you will have access to the device through serial port device on Pi, will just need to know how to "talk" to it :)
