Alarm clock

Fri Jul 12, 2013 5:18 am

Hi there,

I was wondering if there was an easy way to use the pi as an alarm clock with internet radio streaming or mp3 playback.

Thanks,

- Alex

Check out the crontab command.

crontab -e will open an editor with a sample file that allows you to schedule commands. There are command line MP3 player programs available that could be triggered from crontab. The next problem would be how do you switch it off / snooze it. I'm sure you'll be able to find plenty of information on connecting buttons to a Pi.

You'll want amplified speakers to stand a chance of waking anyone up too.

I don't have any noise from my Pi to wake me up, but My Pi does turn on the bedside lamp a few minutes before my alarm goes off. I use the Remote Control Socket thing from issue 8 of MagPi for that.

I'm currently working on a alarm clock. It uses a FM radio as audio, but it could also use internet radio as a source.
More info can be found there:

Still work in progress....

I too use a Pi internet radio as an alarm clock, using cron, as has been suggested. I can also turn it off/on/adjust volume/change stations/etc. with a cheap, simple IR remote solution described on my blog here: http://www.dkographicdetails.com/myPi/?p=20
