Raspberry Pi powered RC car

Fri Apr 05, 2019 8:27 pm

I am planning on putting a raspberry pi 3a+ into an rc car and adding various sensors to it. I already have the raspberry pi with Ubuntu mate (bionic 18.04.2 - https://ubuntu-mate.org/download/) downloaded onto it and have the os up and running. I am planning on putting ROS(robot os) onto it to control the RC car (preferably this one - https://www.argos.co.uk/product/2462732). I will then use the raspberry pi camera and an ultrasonic sensor to allow it to understand its surroundings

So I have 2 questions:

1. Do you think this project will work?
2. Which motor controller board would you recommend to control the motors on the RC car.

I don't see why not as long as there is room for your pi and its power supply/battery and the car is capable of moving with the extra weight once everything is attached.

I would do some testing before deciding on a motor controller as you don't know the current draw of the motor, I would test its stall current using rechargeable batteries and then look for a motor controller rated for that current, you will want one with a low internal volt drop as the motor is probably only 6v so an L298N may not be the most suitable.
We want information… information… information........................no information no help
The use of crystal balls & mind reading are not supported
