Using Pi to control 3 SSR + DS18B20 temperature sensor(s)

Fri Nov 23, 2012 10:15 pm

Hi I'm new to this forum, and automation in general. I hope some of you would be able to help me out a bit.

I am planning to use my Raspberry Pi to control a brewing system. The brewing system is in a planning state, but I have already made some observations of what the control system should be able to do:

Control 3 SSR's
Read temperature from one or two DS18B20 temperature sensors.
Led display to show some simple status (temperature etc.)
Some buttons for input
Wifi networking (usb stick) to show status and control via web browser
PC-speaker (or something else) to give alarm at set intervals

I have no soldiering skills, and would like to soldier as little as possible. I plan to program the system in Ruby.

Is it possible to connect all this to my Raspberry Pi, and if so, what would be the best way to do it? I imagine I would need to buy some external card i can connect all to, and connect the card to the Pi with USB.

The DS18B20 runs on a 1-wire network, I use many of them myself. To use it you will need an adapter, there are many around, USB, Serial and now to connect directly to the GPIO pins on the Pi. I have just bought one (RPI2) from Sheepwalk Electronics,

still testing but it seems to work fine.

Thanks for the tip micksulley.

I have talked with a buddy of mine, and he said he could do all the soldiering for me :)

I found this article on Driving a Relay using GPIO.
The relay i'm planning to use have Trigger Current 12mA /12VDC. Is this something i can get from the Pi, or would i need a external 12v power source? How should i hook this up to my Pi?

I'm thinking of ordering the relays and temperature sensors, and start playing with it. Are there any other essential parts i should/may need?

Hi Olsenius,
I'm basically going to be doing the same thing only I will use my project to control my spa/hot tub.
I have a USB temp sensor off ebay & plan on compiling the kernal on the PI so I can use it.
Also thinking of using a USB to serial or parrallel port adaptor & pyserial/pyparallel to trigger the relays.

Will use GPIO for vacuum display & Temp up & down buttons.

There are some posts in this forum with circuits to provide a proper trigger voltage for SSR's also.
I would like to suggest taking a look at the computer controlled Christmas lights forums.
Those guys use SSR's & PYTHON to control their light displays & it was very informative.

Hi Olsenius,

I have just started out myself, on maybe a similarly brave attempt. wow!

I am an old rubyist, now turned robot builder, and would very much like to invite you to contribute to the ruby + pi site that i made: http://rubinio.org/

I created that as a specific place to share experience with ruby and the pi, and your project, and very much the path to the solution (not just the final solution) would be surely interesting to others.

Anyway, drop me a line or just go and for if you want / know how: [email protected]

About the soldering: you do know about breadboards, yes? Never used one myself, but I wrote what i read here: http://rubinio.org/docs/electronics/boards

Hi Olsenius

I'm planning on doing the exact same thing, could you give some good advise where to start and maybe some detailing on How you did it?
