Hi

I’m after a bit of help, after frying my old laptop in the workshop, I’ve been looking for a new way to control my home built cnc machine,

I currently run an Arduino Uno to control 3 tb6560 stepper drivers. The uno is running Grbl 1.1 and I’ve been using ugs for about 2 years now and would prefer to stick with this platform as it’s good for what I need.

I saw a YouTube video from makes Tyler Winegarner https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=u35L0jGCqFc&t=108s which would be ideal for what I need, but I’m a bit of a noob with programming the pi, I’ve followed Tyler’s steps in the video implicitly but now matter how hard I try, I cannot get ugs to start

Can anyone help me with this?

What Raspberry Pi are you trying this on?
What screen setup do you have?

I just got a stable version of Universal Gcode Sender to run on my stock Raspbian installation on a Raspberry Pi 3. Seems the video is all about doing a custom installation, which is a bit overly complex.

I’m using the original pi 3,

Think I’ve solved launching, it has to be launched by the command line/terminal. Is there a way I can launch it through a shortcut?

You'd need to create a desktop file. Here's one I use for a Java-based application launcher - hope it gives you the idea:

Code: Select all

[Desktop Entry]
Version=1.0
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=SoundBridge Commander
Categories=AudioVideo;Audio;Network;Player;Java;
Comment=SoundBridge Commander
Comment[en_CA]=SoundBridge Commander
Exec=java -jar /home/scruss/Applications/jar/SoundBridgeCommander.jar
Hidden=false
Terminal=false
Type=Application
GenericName[en_CA]=SoundBridge Commander
More on desktop entry files.

You might find bCNC runs much better on the RPi. It is python based and is much the same as UGS in both style, function and GUI interface
UGS is java based and can have problems with the backplot visualiser.
There is also a launcher in the bCNC Master folder ( bCNC with a cog icon)
