WIFI based remote light control

Wed Oct 17, 2012 7:35 am

Hi!

yesterday finally my Raspberry Pi arrived so that I want to start playing around with it immediately :D My first project (that seems a reachable goal) for me is to build a WIFI based illumination controller. While I am quite sure about the software-part, the hardware is (due to my lack of electrical engineering knowledge) a bit of a mistery ;)

My original plan was to install an additional DAC (http://learn.adafruit.com/mcp4725-12-bi ... it-library) and connect the DAC to a Relais (http://www.conrad.ch/ce/de/product/5039 ... Detail=005) to switch a lamp on/off.

Now I wonder if there are better/simpler solutions? Especially, I am looking for a multi-channel solution (multiple lamps). How would one do a dimmer switch?

I am grateful for any kind of input! Best wishes from sunny Zurich,

Stefan

I use X10 stuff with USB serial controller plugged in to a transmitter. I then use software I got here to control the system. Wrote up some simple Python scripts that I control through a web page

X10 is also widely used in Europe. You can buy from http://letsautomate.co.uk/

My experience of X10 is the units are prone to failure. My handful of units all died one by one over a 2 year period.

Sorry to blow my own trumpet, but take a look at MagPI issue 8. I use radio controlled mains sockets to control things around my house.

Geoff.
