Pre-compiled Image of ROS Kinetic on Rasbian Stretch

Tue Jan 02, 2018 11:27 am

If anyone is seeking to install ROS, I have taken the latest official release of ROS (Robot Operating System) being Kinetic and natively compiled that on Rasbian Stretch.

If you want to save the delay of ~5 hours of compilation for ROS Kinetic Desktop, the image and detials can be found at:

You are clearly demented, I gave up years ago trying to do that
Will it run on a Zero?

Serval is still going?
Ouch, Android been nasty again
Latest from Adafruit https://www.adafruit.com/product/3613
Perhaps time for PiPhones, got to be easier than ROS

Aren't we all? ;)

It should run on a Zero, can't see why not. Depends on which nodes are running. Something trying to map gigs and gigs of data might need an external swap space but you can do that over a network.

It might just be a bit slow is all.

Basic ROS stuff works just fine.

I will be controlling an AlphaBot 2 wirh my ROS install. I will write some python or C ROS pacakges for the specific motor controllers if anyone is interested.

...btw 5 hours is compilation time. It did take me 3 days to get to a build that didn't fail :)

... As for Serval yes, slowly but surely it is progressing. I have field tested the latest stable release on Android in rural conditions. They are field testing in Vanuatu at present.

Maybe the Orange Pi is better suited for Serval with its Android implementation.

I gave up on the big software and have moved to Ultibo.
ROS does so much I will never understand it all, ditto for Linux..
Waiting over night for compiles, I still get surprised when those long compiles make stuff that works.

Alpha2 runs ROS? Nearly $2000 :o
What about the StormTrooper Bots?
I think I need to make Ultibo Yoda ;)

I am just using an Alphabot2 so ~$100 for the hardware plus a Raspi 3.

You really could get away with like $20 in parts with a couple of motors etc.

ROS is my preferred platform for this robot because OpenCV is maintained by ROS and OpenCV is so powerful (and fairly easy to use).

The AlphaBot 2 comes with python examples of software to do the bit twiddling for the motors and servo.

This is only my second foray into Python so I mighy end up reimplementing their demos in C.

I'll make sure to upload any code/documentation others might be avle to reuse.

Great job Dingo_aus. Thank you for sharing.
I downloaded it and recorded it on the card, but when I start the RPi, the initialization is locked on a welcome screen and shows a message saying it is in emergency mode. Do you know how to solve this to start normally?
Again, thank you for your help

Can you send link for ROS pakages for AlphaBot2 pi ?
Or send to email taltek.te @ gmail.com
