Metering vibrations on a wall (e.g. dywall)

Mon Jul 24, 2017 3:43 am

I'm trying to meter the vibration/sound on a wall. I have a subwoofer in a room, and want to quantify how much the walls are being vibrated in an adjacent room. Thanks!

Stick a pickup microphone on it?

I'm looking for something more novel using a sensor directly attached to the wall rather than a decibel meter

Why? A microphone is a sensor specifically designed to convert vibrations to electrical signals. Sure you could do it with an accelerometer or even a magnet attached to the wall and a small coil of wire (moving magnet through coil of wire generates electricity) but you are basically reinventing a microphone in a more complex way.

So something like a geophone?

sensitive enough to detect any vibration on a wall or other surface ....

No it's not a "decibel meter". It's a microphone, a sensor, it picks up the vibrations and converts it into an electrical waveform. You stick it on the wall.
Oddly designed to pick up vibrations ;-)

Though you'll need to be picking up low frequencies so check specs.

For novel (but not really novel) look at light pattern deflection of mirrors placed on on a wall, perhaps in a grid or not.
Or create an array of dots and use a camera to determine the vibrations as they move?

or a boring set of accelerometers.
Try them all, see what does/doesn't work.

Lasers can be used, reflection off a mirror glued to the wall?
Piezo buzzer elements will also pick this up but tend to have a resonant frequency.
