Looking for help with security project

Mon Sep 24, 2012 2:46 pm

Hi.

Newbie to UNIX / Pi / Debian etc - please be gentle with me!!

Looking to use the Pi as a security device, but don't know where to start. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Here's what I would like to set up:
* Headless Pi with webcam & usb drive attached
* Motion sensing software, so that the Pi only records from the camera if someone enters the controlled area
* Ability to remotely view the recorded footage from a networked PC (via SSH or whatever)

Ideally, the Pi would have a wi-fi connection to home network to give greater flexibility of locations.

Open to other suggestions, if someone has a simpler method.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I would get a usb webcam and run it from the PI using ffmpeg
get ffmpeg to record individual frames
use processing software to look at differences between neighbouring frames
get ffmpeg to record an mpg if the frames are different and save the data to the raspberry pi running webserver at /var/www
grab the data from the rpi webserver from your machine and watch the footage

Had a look at motion, seems to be what I'm after.

Downlaod / install seems ok so far (corrupted my SD card once so far, but I think that's because I have no patience.....

Thanks for the info macsm !!

I am trying to set up the same kind of deal for a friend, but he has a tree that will make motion run non stop. What I need is a gui based one so I can make the camera ignore the movement from the tree, has anyone ever encountered a program like this?

You can create a movement detection mask for 'motion'. It will then ignore the exact area of the image your marked off.
