If you need to break out the GPIO pins on your Pi check the attached image for a simple way to do it.

Materials needed:

2x20 Female EXTRA LONG Headers or centipe header
2x20 Male right angle Headers

Pi GPIO Leaf (also attached below)
note: To print I used the used the standard (8x11 inch )paper then selected the scale to be 24%

Note please make sure to connect the headers in the middle of the bread board to avoid shortening the pins !

Looks like you'll by buying a new zero as it appears you're shorting all the even pins to odd; the header has to span the gap in the breadboard.

If you can get it to fit, try a "centipede header" at the bottom, so you can straddle the break in the center of the breadboard and ensure half the pins go each side. If it doesn't fit, then I'm afraid you're going to need a custom solution to get the correct spacing between the two rows.

The even-numbered pins need to go to one side of the breadboard, and the odd-numbered pins to the other. Otherwise you'll get 20 shorts as asandford mentioned, and at worst nasty things will happen (like 5v going directly into GPIOs), at best it'll screw up every GPIO signal and nothing will work (there's a chance one or two might work, but it'll be down to sheer luck and still risking frying things with 5v every moment it's running)

Whoops thanks for catching that!

Mostly took the picture on a rush, I actually have extra long headers to place in the middle of the bread board to separate the connections for each gpio pin.

Never heard of the centipede header but it sure looks useful , thanks for sharing!

NOTE : EVERYONE please make sure your connections of the pins are separated by the breadboard gap else the pins will all be connected and a short might happen

Do this:

The pins on this cheap 2x20 header are long & pliable enough to easily bend & straddle a 0.3" breadboard centre-divide.
