WANTED: Three beta testers for low cost robot project

Fri May 13, 2016 11:20 am

I have a low cost (~£10) open source robot design that needs some independent testing to get the instructions & support materials ironed out.

If you live in the UK (posting overseas is slow & expensive), can program GPIO at a basic level already, have a few hours to build (about 30 minutes), program (as much time as you want, at least two hours I'd guess) and feedback (essential, can be by phone or bullet points) and can do this sometime in the next two/three weeks then please post a message below.

Just to head off a few things questions in advance:
  • It's my choice who I decide to go with
  • I'll PM the people I go with to arrange delivery
  • You won't be paid
  • You will get good karma from knowing that you have helped bring an affordable kit to the world and a mention on the website
  • There are only 3 kits available as I only have 3 test PCB's left
  • The kit does not come with a Pi - you have to use your own
  • I will be supporting you directly by email, not via the forum
  • It is intended that kits will be available mid-summer
  • The core organisation is being setup as a non-profit
  • The ~£10 price is currently £8.50 for some enterprising Maker group or school or club buying the parts directly from suppliers and doing the assembly & light soldering themselves
  • The soldering is on a single sided PCB - no surface mount - only basic soldering skills required
  • Soldered single kits have a target price of ~£17 + postage - it takes time to put these kits together
  • The sample program is written in Python but you can use other languages if you want
I'll add more bullet points as they arise, please ensure you've read them before posting any questions.

New bullet points:
  • No soldering required for this beta test - I'll send you a tested kit with the controller board already soldered

I have done a similar test/review for another uk supplier (details privately on request), and would be pleased to assist.

I'd be happy to assist. I've done some Python GPIO control, responding to switches, lighting leds and controlling solenoids. I'm fairly confident soldering. I've also written the tutorial to install full Minecraft.

No soldering required for this beta test - we'll send you a tested kit with the controller board already soldered - don't want any tears at bedtime by releasing the magic smoke that's inside every micro controller!

I'd be happy to help out. Was involved with another beta test last year.

I've access to Pi A, B (two revisions), A+, B+, compute module and Zero if that helps and used to test software for a living.

Hi Nick,

I'm very interested. A simple robotics platform is just the sort of thing I'll be looking for after the summer, as I will be starting an after-school club in Physical Computing at my son's primary school. Plenty of Pi's to test it with. I have the required 'basic knowledge' of gpio with Scratch & Python (but learning more every day :) ).

Regards, Darren.

I'll be happy to evaluate and feedback.

You could send me an unsoldered kit if you like.

If you don't choose me to send an evaluation kit to I will still be happy to read through your support materials and feedback on them.
Doug.

Ditto.

I work in IT and have done rather a lot of years of programming design and test roles, dabble in electronics, and have children who're interested in this sort of thing aged 6->17.

I am also interested in the testing project. I have a pi B+ with all hardware equipment to assemble PCBs as well as mechanics. I have some experience in programming C and of the GPIOs. The only disadvantages I am in Hungary and my mother tongue is hungarian; but it can be an advantage to test whether a foreign speaker can understand what would you like. Postage is not problem, Hungary is in the EU and takes a couple of days with cheap flat rate postage.

Also happy to help, I'm UK based. I can provide Java support if you are at all interested, also have Python, C and C++ knowledge.
