IR Projector/Camera

Sat Feb 20, 2016 3:32 pm

Hi All,

I am new here. I am looking for a 3D depth scanner for Raspberry Pi. If there is no such add-on board I would like to build one. I was able find a module for IR camera but I am not able to find a IP projector. Can anyone point me to a IR projector board or module.

Thx

You may be able to modify a standard projector. Any filament lamp will produce significant levels of IR. With appropriate optical filters you may be able to project an IR image. For LED projectors your could replace the LED with an IR LED.
DLP/DMD might be a better choice than LCD

All sorts of projectors can be bought used on auction sites for very little money if the lamp has failed or is at end of life.

Ready made IR projectors would be very specialist things with small market an high price. I've never see one listed anywhere.

Here is something that looks expensive.

Thanks for the suggestion. I am looking for an add on board with IR camera and an IR projector. Otherwise I want to build a board like that. As an example if you see the board http://structure.io/core it has 2xIR cameras, 1xRGB camera and an IR projector. All I am looking for a board with IR camera and an IR projector. I can take the pictures with IR camera and do the 3D processing at a different location.

Is it possible to use IR LEDs and put a mask (like a slide) for projection? Do you know any module of chip which can do that. Otherwise do you know who ships the projector in http://structure.io/core board.

Thanks for suggesting DLP DMD, I am checking that now.

Thanks,
KY

Looks like http://www.ti.com/product/DLP4500NIR
is a good chipset to use for IR projector.

Also good info is at
http://www.ti.com.cn/cn/lit/ml/dlpt021a/dlpt021a.pdf

Do you have any other suggestions?

You could always use a Kinect or Structure sensor. There are similar devices coming from Intel and maybe others.

Do you know bare board supplier for Kinect?

Intel Realsense R200 is a out of supply and I don't know their roadmap for the same. Adding to this it is an overkill for my project.

Still the cost is very high from these suppliers. I am thinking of building a board with a BOM of $20/-

I have been doing some research into TI chip DLP4500
http://www.ti.com/product/DLP4500NIR

Looks like it can't be made to work with USB power. We need some other chip. Any ideas?

I am also thinking of projecting a fixed pattern with IR LEDs. Does anyone know how to do this?

Are you on a tight budget?

This looks interesting, but probably more than a Kinect.

I've gotten the current generation Structure Sensor working great as a depth sensor w/ Raspian and OpenNI2. You just need a USB Hacker cable, which is available on the store. Here's a quick video I recorded of live depth streaming from the Pi https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDL8Xtb ... e=youtu.be

Good work. Was it simple to get going? Could you post info about what you did? Thanks.

Thanks for all the links.
Yes, I want it very cheap as I am on tight budget. BTW I can get Intel R200 for $100/- but I am trying to make the 3D scanner very cheap.

I have checked the link http://www.opto-engineering.com/product ... projectors
The problem with these projectors is that they are power hungry 12V!!
I want to build something with USB power.

Also is it possible to get the data sheet for Kinect IR projector

Hi there,

I am new to IR depth camera + RPi and found this thread. I was wondering if somebody has tried something with a more off-the-shelf since 2016 (last post)?

For example
https://click.intel.com/intelr-realsens ... -d435.html

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated! Thanks
